The origins of Tartaros are deeply intertwined with the Black Wizard Zeref. The guild was primarily established and led by Etherious, magical beings created directly by Zeref himself, though they did employ human soldiers to further their cause. These demons were bound by their nature to seek destruction and chaos, viewing humanity as an obstacle to be removed. The guild's leadership was dominated by the Nine Demon Gates, a council of powerful entities who orchestrated their plans with cold precision. Their most ambitious scheme involved hijacking the Etherion, a massive magic cannon capable of destroying an entire country. However, their plan was not to wipe out life directly; they intended to use the Etherion to destroy the Magic Council, then activate Face to erase all magic across Ishgar, rendering humans defenseless and causing their extinction. Despite their supernatural resilience, Tartaros was not invincible. Permanently defeating an Etherious requires destroying their internal 'Key,' which can be achieved through various means—such as Demon Slayer Magic, Natsu's flames, or other sufficiently powerful attacks—not solely through Demon Slayer Magic or self-destruction. No canonical method like Excalibur (a fabricated item not present in Fairy Tail) has been shown to work. The guild's downfall came when Fairy Tail and allied forces infiltrated their stronghold, dismantling the Nine Demon Gates by targeting these vital weak points.
