The series follows Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia as they interact with and befriend other wizards throughout Fiore. They encounter various antagonists from illegal "dark" guilds and face Zeref, an ancient wizard who serves as the main antagonist. Mashima based the titular guild on a local bar he was visiting during creation, using people as references for character designs. The series draws influence from Akira Toriyama, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Yudetamago. Natsu's motion sickness is based on a friend who gets sick in taxis, while his relationship with the dragon Igneel reflects Mashima's own father's death. When Del Rey Manga published the early North American volumes, Kodansha Comics later took over, and the official English spellings were handled by the translation team rather than Mashima personally.

In Their Own Story

Lucy Heartfilia joins Fairy Tail after being rescued from a slave trader posing as "Salamander," Natsu's moniker. She forms a team with Natsu and Happy at the suggestion of the celestial spirit Plue, later expanding to include Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet after shared missions. Wendy Marvell and Carla are also considered team members. Throughout their adventures, they perform paid guild missions to fund Lucy's rented house in Magnolia, often suffering reward reductions due to Natsu and Happy's destructive antics. A pivotal turning point occurs when it is revealed that Natsu is actually "Etherious Natsu Dragneel" (E.N.D.), a demon sent 400 years from the past by his brother Zeref as part of a conspiracy to kill both Zeref and the evil dragon Acnologia.
