Gray's origins are rooted in tragedy: his mother died of illness, and when he was eight, the Etherious Deliora killed his father. Surviving this event, he fell under the tutelage of Ur, who taught him Ice Make magic—a technique allowing him to instantly produce ice in the form of any weapon or object he imagines. His training involved withstanding extreme cold temperatures, a regimen that inadvertently instilled in him a habit of subconsciously stripping his clothes, a trait creator Hiro Mashima noted was based on his own personal habits. Gray's path to Fairy Tail was forged through loss; he recklessly attempted to kill Deliora alone, forcing Ur to sacrifice herself by sealing the demon with Iced Shell, an act that saved both Gray and Lyon. This event solidified his resolve and led him to join the guild where he eventually became an S-Class wizard.
