The Alvarez Empire was a military force that invaded Fiore after Natsu returned from a one-year training journey. Their leader, Zeref, had spent 400 years cursed with immortality and deadly power, wishing only to die to atone for his atrocities. The empire's existence was driven by this desperate wish: Zeref planned to acquire Fairy Heart to erase his own existence from history, preventing himself from ever becoming the Black Wizard. This goal placed him in direct conflict with Fairy Tail, who guarded Mavis Vermillion beneath their guild hall. The conflict revealed that Natsu Dragneel was actually Zeref's younger brother, resurrected as a demon named E.N.D. (Etherious Natsu Dragneel) and sent 400 years into the future via the Eclipse gate, with Igneel's role being to seal Natsu's demonic power and raise him, not to collude in sending him through time. The empire's ultimate defeat came when the Curse of Contradiction ended as Zeref and Mavis died together—Mavis perished because the curse caused her to die when Zeref was killed by Natsu (with Mavis's help), not simply by choice.

His plan hinged on capturing Fairy Heart from Mavis Vermillion, whose cursed body preserved a wellspring of infinite magic. During the battle against Zeref, Natsu discovered his true identity as E.N.D., the demon incarnation Zeref had created 400 years ago with Igneel's help to eventually be killed by him. Although Natsu failed to kill Zeref as intended, he managed to incapacitate him to stop the drastic historical changes. This allowed Mavis to reciprocate Zeref's love, which simultaneously lifted their curses and resulted in both of their deaths.
