In this dimension, Ethernano—a natural resource being depleted—is the lifeblood of civilization, powering everything from personal vehicles to massive war machines. Because magic is rare and suppressed here, the people of Edolas view it as a myth or a dangerous anomaly, leading to a society where 'mages' are hunted and captured. The conflict arises when King Faust, the ruler of Edolas, discovers that his world is running out of Ethernano. His solution is to merge Edolas with Earth Land using a massive device called the Anima, which siphons magic power from Earth Land to save his own. This plan—referred to as Operation: Anima or the Anima Project—brings the two worlds into collision, forcing the Fairy Tail guild members to confront their 'Edolas selves'—versions of themselves who are soldiers for the royal army or hold entirely different social standings.
